Welcome to the home of Shandlmain Rough & Smooth Collies!
"I have never known life without dogs. When I was growing up we always had the ‘family’ dogs to play with, to cuddle and to comfort us if we ever felt sorry for ourselves and what comforters they were! My parents held the Affix of 'Swanmount' when I was a child and occasionally bred Cocker Spaniels. My Affix of 'Shandlmain' was taken out in 1997, I added my husband Mark as a joint interest in my Affix in 2011. My love of the Rough Collie, along with most other people, started with the heart wrenching films of ‘Lassie’ and again, doing my homework, I decided that the Rough Collie was the breed for me. I have not looked back since.
I show the dogs at both Championship and Open Level and Judge the Breed currently on the 'Breed Specialist A2 List' for Rough Collies and 'Non Breed Specialist B List' for Smooth Collies working toward A3 currently, and 'C' List for all other breeds, I was Treasurer of East Anglian Collie Association from 2010 but have resigned this position April 2017. I am a Member of the Committee of Smooth Collie Association of Great Britain and have been appointed the Breed Education Coordinator for Smooth Collies, my husband Mark is also a Committee Member on East Anglian Collie Association. I am also a fully paid up member of the KC Academy.
In 2012, we were lucky enough to be able to add to our Rough Collies our first Smooth Collie, from the famous German Kennel 'Jack Mack's' and clever and skilled Gudrun Hartman. We had been interested in Smooth Collies for many years, but always seem to miss out on the UK Smooth Collies being a vulnerable breed, whenever we were in a position to be able to have a Smooth Collie there were no UK Smooths around, so we made the decision to import from Gudrun a 'Jack Mack's' Smooth Collie, to help diversify the gene pool in the UK as well by bringing in fresh blood. The first attempt failed and our second attempt nearly also after an accident I had at Paignton Championship Show whilst handling another exhibitor's dog and injuring my leg, might have put our plans on the back boiler again but for Nick and Anne Smith coming to the rescue, so I decided that we would offer our imported Smooth in partnership with Nick and Anne as a way of thanks for making my dream come true. So now we have evolved to Shandlmain Rough AND Smooth Collies and looking forward to a future with both breeds. In May 2016 we have bred our very first litter of Smooth Collies and will be retaining a dog and bitch puppy from the litter to show.
Our Smooth Collie Bitch, Tien, after raising successfully our first litter of Smooth Collies is now no longer in partnership with Nick and Anne, returned into ownership between myself and Mark in 2016. Nick and Anne Smith have a dog Puppy from this litter who they will campaign in Europe (Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar). We were also honoured that Tien's Breeder, Mrs Gudrun Hartmann travelled over from Germany with Petra and between them they have taken back another very promising puppy from the litter who will be campaigned in Germany in the show ring and also compete in Agility and Obedience in the future.
Recently (May 2018) we have in partnership with Mrs Brenda Trundley (Juniperwood) imported a very promising tri colour male Smooth Collie who will reside here at Shandlmain and be campaigned in the show ring. - Mrs. Cathy Howard
